[Synopsis]
In 'The Devil's Advocate' the radio talk host known as 'Mandrake' stomps into the radio stations' studio, in a terrible mood for finding some dead hobo in the seat of his car earlier before coming into work. He goes on the air with an agenda against cops since they blamed the murder on him. The brave souls that call in to 'Mandrake' are chewed apart by the quick tongued radio DJ and verbally beats the callers into a bloddy pulp.
The engineer says not one word to the host, only shakes his head in disgust at Mandrake's antics. Mandrake is a man that has been down on the world since losing his whole family to a series of tragic events and seems to have turned the man into a monster. Before long, his callers begin taking on some warped sense of reality and claiming to be calling in from the distant past. Mandrake doesn't know what to think after awhile and soon enough begins hearing voices. Mandrake's whole world seemingly closes in all around him..[end]
[REVIEW]
This is one of my favorite episodes from the second season. For some reason, I love episodes where there is one character left in solitude. During the whole episode, the camera is virtually on 'Mandrake' the whole time and does a very good job of creating that solitary feel. The creepy lonely atmosphere works so well in this episode. 'Mandrake' is played by Jerry Stiller (Ben Stiller's dad!) and puts in a fantastic performance and is alot of fun to listen to as he puts down the world and verbally assaults everyone he comes into contact with on the radio. He is one arrogant SOB!
I love the cheap early 80's feel of the episode with the sounds and flashing console lights within the studio, which again, adds to the creepiness. The ending is quite nightmarish and the old-time music that plays over Mandrake's newly established sense of being at the very end of the episode was a very nice touch. This is one of my favorites!!
