Does anybody know where the scenes from the opening sequence were filmed at? I guess more specifically, the covered bridge, the farm and the various roads that are shown... How cool would it be to visit that covered bridge one day with the theme song playing in your ear on your iPod? Any info is appreciated..

I would be extremely creeped out! especially if the car stalled or something. LOL I wonder if it could have been an area from the east coast?

Or if you are just driving somewhere and you happen to be playing the music and you notice the surroundings are eerily similar to the intro sequence only to find out it's the same locations. Now that would be creepy.

I'd be willing to bet it was filmed in upstate NY.

I've been wondering the same thing and googled my brains out but can't find it. I live in southwestern PA though and I swear that there is a farm near here that looks exactly and I mean exactly like the one in the opening sequence. It's located in Boswell, PA. There is a covered bridge somewhere in the area but I can't remember where. The road, fence, field things look exactly like the Mellon Estates which are in Ligonier, PA also very near the barn location. The stream could be from a lot of different places around here.

I was a huge TFTD fan as a kid (born in '75) and I've traveled extensively through all continental 48 states over the past 12 years.
The film of the opening sequence is definitely filmed in the North Eastern US (possibly south eastern Canada but I would doubt this) either Maine, New Hampshire, Upstate New York, Penn, possibly southern New Jersey.
The real clues to the locations are going to be the mountains in the background, and the clip where they show the forest. I *think* the forest is birch trees, of which certain species require very specific conditions to thrive.
Also, if you can see the shape and color (the foliage) on distant mountains you can tell what region you are in.
I haven't seen the opening sequence in some time. I'll re-watch it and see what I can tell.
Funny, I always thought I was the only person out there who used to wonder where the opening sequence was filmed.

Ha! This is so funny. I have always thought about this. Some of my earliest memories are of the opening of this show and I remember painting these scenes shown in the opening for art while I was in first grade. The images combined with the music had a strange effect on me. I grew up in Western Connecticut and the shots reminded my young mind of the area I lived. The countryside, which was a little nicer then than it is now. It felt like home. Now that I am older and I watch these scenes I look at them a bit more critically. I think they are almost certainly in the Northeast, probably related to Appalachia. Probably not Connecticut or even Massachusetts but there is a good Chance NY and PA. I don't think it'd be VT or NH, though.

Wow I can't believe other people are asking this question. I've wondered for years and finally decided to just start googling tonight to see what I could turn up.
sleepyhollow77, do you have a source for that info? I'd love to know conclusively. One day I want to take a vacation to these places, see how they've changed.

On second look at the intro, I think you are 100% correct. the surroundings look like the show too, I wouldn't be surprised if they filmed around that very area in PA. you can see the bridge itself on google maps if you follow heritage road nw from osterburg PA, there will be a turn to your left for state rte 0869, go look at it through street view there. Apparently the bridge isn't in use anymore, but that's still awesome.

Hey all,
Yes, the person who said southwestern PA is 100% correct. The rest of the show was filmed in and around Pittsburgh.

It's Diehl's Covered Bridge in Bedford County - just north of Manns Choice, Pennsylvania.

I really thought it looked like Western PA. I bet it is seeing how George Romero was involved with it.
